The Twins First Flight: Into the Unknown

Today I present you with a tale of one of the biggest leaps of faith I have ever taken. Not only is it the story of flying with my twins for the first time but also hopefully an inspiration for those who think it would be too difficult to move abroad.

Last July, with all our belongings in a sea container, we packed up our three kids, including 8 month old twins, and were off to live in the U.K. It was a journey of exploration and a test of our strength as a family. Since changing continents, we have experienced a bunch of struggles, but have also had a bunch of tremendous adventures as well. In addition to being all over the U.K., we have spent time in Italy, France, Greece, and will be heading to Germany in a few weeks.

Being able to move around and work in different locations can be hard sometimes, you often leave family and great friends behind, but the different corners of the world you get to explore make it worth the struggles. For anyone considering moving abroad for work, jump in and give it a shot!

YQB was quiet, thankfully.

The photo above was as we awaited departing Quebec City. I remember being thankful that the airport was very quiet that afternoon as we could all relax a bit and have some space. We flew the short hop to a much busier airport in Montreal and had one last feast of smoked meat and poutine before boarding the seven hour flight to London.

The short hop to Montreal and the long haul to London both went surprisingly well, with everyone actually getting some sleep. It was so unremarkable from the perspective of flying with twin babies, I actually squeezed in watching the equally unremarkable Avengers: Age of Ultron. In retrospect, after spending the last year exploring Europe, it was one of the easier experiences we have had flying with the twins.

Savvy travellers always review safety instructions after boarding.

We were exhausted after arriving in London. Two hours at border control and the cab driver getting lost on the way to our hotel did not help things. I also learnt that no matter how happy she is to be somewhere, after 16 hours of travelling with babies and in a lost black cab with two babies attached to her is not the time my wife wants to be the subject of photos.

She was happy, I swear.

Go forth and explore! Whatever the result, you will likely regret the chances you don’t take more than the ones you do.

Safe and happy travels!

Wow. A leap of faith indeed! We relocated ourselves and our two dogs from the uk to Australia. A stressful time with sooo many things that have to be done. But at least I didn’t have to cope with the dogs on the flight itself!

    1. Me too! Is there an award for that? Does it come with a cash prize? 😉
